Sewer Utility

Millville Sewer Utility
Located on the Maurice River at Fowser Road, approximately one mile from the center of town, the Millville Sewer Utility {New Jersey Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NJPDES) Permit No. NJ0029467} operates a 5 million gallon per day (MGD) wastewater treatment plant with a sanitary sewer collection system that includes 21 sewage lift stations and 80 to 90 miles of collection lines.

We serve a population of approximately 27,000 residents. Our effluent, after treatment at the plant, meets and surpasses all federal and state requirements set by our operating permit before it is discharged to the Maurice River.

Our team of 18 employees includes administration, laboratory, data processing, clerical, operations, and maintenance personnel, who provide service 24/7 year-round. They work cooperatively and efficiently to operate and maintain both the treatment plant and the collection system, thus ensuring that the plant remains in compliance with all regulations.

Grease & Oil Ordinance

The City of Millville has an ordinance pertaining to grease and oil. These regulations are established to aid in the prevention of sanitary sewer blockages, odors, and obstructions from contributions and accumulations of fats, oils, and greases into the municipal sewer system from commercial or industrial establishments, particularly food preparation and serving facilities. Such clogs can result in sewer backups into homes or local waterways, and result in increased maintenance costs of the collection system.

Sewer Backups

A sewer backup can cause significant problems for a property owner including loss of possessions and health and safety issues. If you are experiencing a problem with your drains, call the Sewer Utility first. Our personnel will check the sewer main and inform you of the findings. If the problem is in the sewer lateral, the homeowner or business is responsible for correcting the problem. The owner of the property is responsible for maintaining and cleaning the sewer lateral from the building (or home) to the sewer main, including the connection on the sewer main.
