How to Register

Registration Requirements

To register in New Jersey you must be:

  • A United States citizen
  • At least 18 years old by the next election
  • A resident of the county for 30 days before the election

How to Register

Mail or deliver the Voter Registration Application and/or Party Affiliation Form to the county commissioner of registration or superintendent of elections. The Vote-by-Mail Application needs to be mailed or delivered to the County Clerk's Office in the county where you reside.

Where to Register

Applications for registration can be obtained from the Division of Elections, the Commissioners of Registration Office in the county where you live, or from your municipal clerk. Registration forms are also available at Division of Motor Vehicle offices. You can also register to vote at the same time you are applying for assistance or service at the following agencies:

  • Armed Forces of the United States recruitment offices
  • Commission of the Blind and Visually Impaired
  • County Welfare Agency or County Board of Social Services
  • Division of Developmental Disabilities
  • Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services - Department of Labor
  • New Jersey Medical Assistance and Health Services Program
  • Office of Disability Services - Department of Human Services - Public Offices
  • WIC (Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children)
  • Work First New Jersey Programs

You can also print a registration application, and, after entering the required data, mail it to the Commissioners of Registration Office in the county where you reside. In addition, this form can be used for name and address changes.

The commissioners of registration cannot accept faxed copies or an electronic transmission of a voter registration form since an original signature is required.

The registrant must download the form and send the hard copy to the commissioner of registration. The registration deadline to vote at the next election is 21 days prior to election day.

Residents may register at the Municipal Clerk's Office, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Voting Options

  • Vote in person at your designated polling place. To find your polling place, a list of polling places can be found below.
  • Vote using Vote-by-Mail. In New Jersey, you do not need a reason to vote through the mail. A voter may apply for a Vote-by-Mail ballot by completing a Vote-by-Mail Application and mailing the application to their county clerk up to seven days prior to the election. A voter may also apply in person to the county clerk until 3 p.m., the day before the election. The county clerk cannot accept faxed copies of a Vote-by-Mail Application since an original signature is required. Now there is no excuse not to vote!
